Three Sikhs now cabinet ministers in Canada

INGsikhsJustin Trudeau, 42, took the oath as Canada’s prime minister and swore in his Cabinet, including 3 Sikhs appointed as cabinet ministers, at a grand public ceremony in Ottawa.

Harjit Sajjan, 42, was appointed defence minister, Navdeep Bains, 38, was given the portfolio of innovation, science and economic development.Amarjeet Sohi who is the only not turbaned Sikh of the three was been sworn in as minister for infrastructure. Interestingly Sohi, a former bus driver, was jailed in India for two years in the 1980s.

Navdeep Bains who is seen as being very suave was a visiting professor at Ryerson University in Toronto. MP Harjit Sajjan the new defence minister served in Afghanistan and Bosnia, and has been a special adviser on Afghanistan. He worked with the Vancouver Police Department for 11 years.

Justin Trudeau is the son of former prime minister Pierre Trudeau who is credited with opening Canada to new immigrants in the 1970s. Trudeau is the second youngest prime minister of Canada.
