In order to boost India’s performance in future Olympic Games, PM Narendra Modi announced that a Task Force will be formed to prepare a comprehensive action plan for ‘effective participation’ of Indian sports persons in the next 3 Olympic Games in 2020, 2024 and 2028.
The announcement was made at a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers, during which the PM also reviewed the performance of the various ministries vis a vis promises made in the last 3 budgets. Modi also examined the status of the implementation of the Departmental Action Plan from various ministries.
Reports say the PMO has asked the Sports Ministry to submit a detailed report on India’s disappointing performance at the Rio Games. The report has to be submitted by the end of September. The Task Force will be set up in the next few days.
The PM’s announcement comes when sports federations are reviewing in detail what happened in Rio. The Athletics Federation of India has also decided to take stock of their flop next week, and the Wrestling Federation of India has suggested that it will focus on young wrestlers for the Tokyo Olympics.
The Sports Authority of India Director General, Injetti Srinivas said there is no hiding the Rio disappointment but the fact is they are totally relying on a handful of athletes for medals and that is not going to help.
