WCD Minister Maneka Gandhi after a meeting with MEA minister Sushma Swaraj, said now the three member committee will have an official from each ministry which will hopefully prove to be more effective.
In July 2015 the Minister of State for External Affairs General V K Singh said that between 2012 to 2015, 203 cases of fraudulent marriages was taken up by it in 12 Indian missions abroad. In 2009, the NCW chief Girija Vyas said 2 out of 10 NRI marriages ended in desertion during the honeymoon alone. Former MEA Minister Valayar Ravi also in 2008, said Punjab alone had registered over 20,000 such cases.
One official said there are also cases of husbands keeping the passports of wives, leaving wives in India, or abandoning them abroad.
For this reason they are now looking at a proactive role of the Indian missions abroad so that a man who is harassing his wife will have his passport cancelled and the host country will be informed accordingly by the Indian Mission.
