Two NRIs arrested for conspiring to smuggle people into US

CRIneapNileshkumar Patel and Harsad Mehta were arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport and remanded to custody on charges of smuggling and conspiracy, as they conspired with an undercover federal agent to smuggle people from Thailand to New Jersey.

Patel and Mehta met with the undercover Homeland Security Investigations agent Douglas Doherty on a number of occasions in Bangkok, and paid the agent up to $50,000 to have 6 Indians smuggled into New Jersey without legal clearance. Patel was involved in all six cases, and Mehta in four.
