Police booked 7 persons including 2 NRIs on alleged charges of kidnapping, extortion and criminal conspiracy on a complaint of an NRI who alleged they had extorted Rs.25 lakhs from him by threatening to kill him. Upon the complaint of Kenya-based Gurmit Singh, police registered a case under various sections of the law.
Gurmit and Navdeep who also lived in Kenya were old acquaintances.
The complainant alleged that both men called him in July to discuss jointly buying a garden. He alleged that the duo made him captive in a room and started beating him, demanding Rs.1 crore for his release, and threatened to kill him if he did not cough up the amount.
He then struck a deal, giving them Rs.25 lakhs and informed his family in Phagwara to give the amount to their accomplices.
The duo sent their men to his Phagwara house in July, who got the cash from his family, then he was thrown in front of Nairobi West hospital critically injured.
After he came out of the hospital he lodged a complaint with police and also reported the matter to the Indian High Commissioner there.
He then went to India and filed a complaint with the Kapurthala police after which the Satnampura police booked the seven accused, including Navdeep Singh and Gurmit Singh both from Amritsar. They are yet to be arrested
