UAE doctor who led campaign for NRI overseas vote is elated

NRI Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, managing director of VPS Healthcare, who filed a pubic-interest litigation last April seeking the enforcement of Indian Citizens' fundamental right to vote and cast their vote abroad, paved the way for over a million NRIs to vote overseas. He is elated that the Indian Supreme Court has directed the federal government to enable voting for NRIs within 8 weeks. Dr Vayalil who has lived in the UAE for 12 years and runs 9 hospitals in the Emirates, said the next general election in India could be decided by NRIs in the Middle East. According to Indian government statistics there are over 10 million NRIs, 1.7 million of whom live in the UAE. Voting rights will also ensure that the voices of poor Indian workers will be heard in the next general election in 2019.
