UK town gets its first Sikh mayor

NRINGBediParvinder Singh Batth a Conservative party councillor who has served his local borough of Wokingham in Berkshire as Deputy Mayor, has now taken charge as the Mayor from Councillor Ulla Karin Clark. He will serve till 2017.

Councillor Batth thanked Clark for her support and said he will duly fulfill the duties of his role to the best of his judgment. He named the children’s organisation ‘Arc’ an organisation that aims to transform the lives of children through a range of education, health and child protection programmes, as his chosen charity this year.

Councils across the UK run the day-to-day affairs of areas of a city or town and the mayor’s role includes hosting fundraising and other activities to promote his local area. This is often seen as a stepping stone to becoming an MP.
