Dr Sreekrishna Cheruvu, 58, of New York, has been charged with health care fraud and submitting false claims for payment totalling $800,000. He could face 10 years in prison, and the charges carry a fine of $250,000. Cheruvu treated patients for opioid addiction, and submitted false and fraudulent claims between 2009 and 2014 to private insurance companies seeking reimbursement for services allegedly provided. These claims included reimbursement for individual counselling sessions, when in fact patients were seen in a group therapy setting, and reimbursement for services provided even though he was out of the country. He also sought payments for office visits of family members of patients who in reality were not his patients.
