NRI Frank Islam, 63, an entrepreneur and philanthropist, is to be conferred with the Uttar Pradesh Ratna Award for his achievements and outstanding contributions in a foreign country. The UP Ratna award was instituted to recognise achievements and contributions of NRIs who hail from the state. Recipients of the award are felicitated with a shawl, citation certificate and memento.
Mr Islam who was born in Azamgarh district and studied at Aligarh Muslim University will be honoured by UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav at the inaugural UP Pravasi Diwas in Agra on January 4.
In a statement Mr Islam said UP is where his journey started and he is delighted to be honoured by the state. He went to the US in the early 1970s to study at the University of Colorado where he got his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Computer Science. He founded Information Technology firm QSS in 1994 and built his company from being himself the one sole employee, to having over 2000 employees and sales of $ 300 million, before he sold his company in 2007.
Mr Islam has donated $2 million to Aligarh Muslim University for the construction of a new school of management. He now heads the FI Investment Group that he established in 2007. He has authored two books – ‘Working the Pivot Points To Make America Work Again’; and ‘Renewing the American Dream – A Citizen’s Guide for Restoring Our Competitive Advantage.
