US NRI facing death sentence to represent himself in Court

NRICRIrsRaghunandan Yandamuri, 29, a software engineer on an H-1B visa who is now facing the death sentence by lethal injection, has told a US court that he wishes to represent himself during an appeal to the State Supreme Court in Pennsylvania.

Andhra Pradesh native Raghunandan has been found guilty of the double murder of Satyavathi Venna, 61, and her 10-month-old grand-daughter Saanvi Venna, at their apartment in Pennsylvania in 2012, after a failed kidnapping bid.

At a hearing recently a Montgomery County Judge allowed Raghunandan to represent himself, but only after a warning on the strict and rigid procedures of the high court. The judge has also appointed two standby attorneys to help Raghunandan if needed.
