US NRI hotelier pays thousands to settle lawsuit

Bharat I Patel, has agreed to pay over $180,000 to 200 current and former staff at his 15 hotels in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota, after an investigation by the labour department found he had failed to pay their overtime and minimum wages in violation of the Fair Labour Standards Act.

Patel violated the law by paying hourly employees straight-time pay for hours worked over a 40 hour workweek, and failed to pay the legally required time and a half.

Denver’s acting regional Administrator said restoring the wages will make a meaningful difference in the quality of life for the workers and their families.
