The Uttarakhand government has allowed farmers from across the state, except Terai and Bhabhar regions, to grow hemp for industrial purposes. To this end, farmer will have to get a licence by the excise department to grow cannabis.
Hemp with a tetra hydro cannabinol content of 0.3 to 1.5 percent can be used for industrial purposes such as the manufacture of fibre.
The government has also made it clear that the farmers can only sell their produce to the government and not to private buyers.
The move is expected to bring much needed cash into the rural economy of Uttarakhand, which is in dire need of cash crops.
