Speaking at an interactive session with the Indian diaspora in Abu Dhabi on the occasion of her first visit to the UAE as External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj said the welfare of NRIs particularly in the Gulf countries is one of the leading priorities of her government as NRIs must be a part of the growth story of the Nation. She said the government in collaboration with the state governments has been proactively devising ways and means to address the concerns of Indians living abroad, and they have also engaged with the UAE government on various matters concerning the community here. A Memorandum of Understanding on Manpower was signed between the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in India and the Ministry of Labour in the UAE. The Ministry has undertaken measures through the institution of the Indian Community Welfare Fund, setting up of an Indian Workers Resource Centre and online information system regarding transportation of mortal remains. Also, the embassy in Abu Dhabi has brought out an advance copy of "Guidelines for Indians' which she hopes will be beneficial for Indians in the UAE.
