West Bengal tea workers murder owner over pay dispute

According to the police Rajesh Agarwal, owner of the Sonali tea estate in West Bengal who had gone to pacify workers who had not been paid for some months, was dragged away and died after he was beaten and stabbed by a crowd of workers. Two men and five women have been held. Several incidents of attacks on tea executives by workers have been reported as many workers are malnourished and poorly paid. In 2012 a plantation owner and his wife were burned to death in the neighbouring state of Assam. India is the world's second largest tea producer after China.
