Surprisingly women have won nearly 44% of the pradhan seats in panchayat polls across UP, diluting the myth that elections at the rural level are male dominated. This means that 11% are female winners.
Election Commissioner Satish Kumar Agarwal said the results are proof of women empowerment in the state and women will play a major role in the future. The winners included four PhD holders.
According to official figures some 9,924 candidates were in the running for 1,192 seats of gram pradhans over 15 blocks of the district and when the final results were announced an astonishing 568 winners turned out to be women, a majority of which are in the age group 25 – 30.
